We're pretty much always looking for projects that our inner ten year old would love, but C'MON..

"[A New] Hope" is a privately commissioned holiday card series and serious geek cred garnering play off the old Peace, Joy, Hope season's greeting card standard. The collection presents a trio of beautifully refined, intricately detailed and delicately illustrated snowflakes.. that are made up of starfighters [and the Millennium Falcon] employed by the Rebel Alliance to destroy the Death Star in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. What? Ask your Dad.

We'd like to take full credit for this two in one kitchen island concept [get it?], but the idea here was really born out of necessity. The existing floor area was simply not big enough to accommodate an island AND a traditional freestanding table. The solution is both [we love when compromise means getting everything!], a full size kitchen island with a conjoined twin that provides twice the prep area, counter seating for four and the fun expanding capability to take the party outside, literally; the abutted banquet table, along with a family of hidden counter stools, is designed to be separated and pulled to the garden patio just outside the kitchen for, say, family picnics, late summer barbecues.. or Oysterfest!

The materials are radically simple.. 100% recycled glass and local felled Hickory, hand finished in clear or iridescent stains and whitewash.. And absolutely everything from the custom sink basin to the expression of the wood grain to the louvered cabinet fronts are tailored to elongate the lines of the piece.. just because we care about things like that!

Now, what's for dinner?

Folks out here bottle their own seasonal ales, generate their own local energy surpluses, homegrow their own pharmaceuticals [shhh!] and, yes, raise their own chickens [almost sounds easy compared to the energy generation thing, we know].

FYI, the City of Portland currently allows three hens per household [no roosters.. haters!] without a permit, so with that do it yourself spirit burning from within and Johnny Law practically turning a blind eye to the whole endeavor, the only thing really holding anybody back from full throttle urban egg farming has GOT to be the coop architecture. It's bad. Real bad.

So when PREACHER was challenged to create a new look alternative to, well, everything that's currently available, we just started from scratch.

The result is all common sense innovation dropped into a low slung chassis frame. There's over sixty square feet of roaming room overall, with a "green floor" of removable buffet trays that can be seeded with grass or filled with scratch and a club level hen house; a lower level feeding trough pulls out for composting of food scraps and waste refuse. The skin of the coop is comprised of interlocking wood slats that can be infinitely arranged to create openings and trellis shading vines, allowing for full customized control of heat and natural light intake, regardless of orientation. The roof system, made up of bent recycled aluminum sheet metal panels, funnels rainwater through a drainage slot directly into a narrow profile reservoir tank under the roof where it is stored as drinking water for the chickens. A similar compartment on the opposite end is for tool storage.

There's so much more! We haven't even gotten to the find-them-anywhere construction materials, the inside jokes, the killer paint scheme ideas! But, if this goes on long enough, you know we're going to resort to cross the road jokes or off color bird puns; it's probably best that it ends this way.

It's not often that we get beat at our own game, but for plate | craft owner Bonnie Perhac, simple is a credo, not an adjective. Early concept sketches for a calling card for her hotly in demand catering service were mostly met with a polite nose crinkle and a charge to make the design more simple still. To her credit, the final design, honed by that insistence on simplicity, speaks volumes about her work with plate | craft.

There are some nuanced design considerations here, like the subtle reworking of the classic Garamond typeface and the supersaturated eggplant color, but really this is all about tone, evoking plate | craft's unpretentious, heavily researched and thoughtfully crafted [and, yes, simple] approach to food.

Anybody who's ever sat down at Bonnie's kitchen table for Sunday Night Dinner knows exactly what we're talking about. But, if you've never been lucky enough to get an invitation, don't worry; you can still hire her to recreate the experience at your house. Just ask for her card.

This is second.

The table, designed for the Napa Valley tasting room of international premium drinks giant Diageo, is by definition still just a table, but symbolically it's more of a proclamation. There was a surprisingly considered list of program use details and object symbolism from the client with this one, but, without getting into the minutia, we'll just note that the word "substantial" got thrown around pretty liberally early on. We're pretty sure they were thinking family table. We were thinking battleship.

The compromise is a stripped down, all muscle take on a traditional farm table made of bookmatched, solid felled California Black Walnut [the client wanted Redwood, but you can't party on Redwood], hand finished with boiled linseed oil. The subtle game changer? No head of the table.

Oh, and we know how you feel about super graphics, but this is a refined, laser cut, hand inlaid recycled zinc super graphic of a song lyric by emo wondergroup Fall Out Boy. Still no? You're weird.

And for simple, design problems don't come better than "table." There's really only the one prerequisite that someone can put things on it with the reasonable assumption that it won't fall over.

So, for this table, designed for Todd Youngs of Constantine, we decided to run with the theme. Every aspect study of this design, from the materials [a single piece of reclaimed old forest White Oak and recycled white anodized aluminum], to the finish [a hand applied, biodegradable milk paint], to the singular flourish [a racing stripe lifted from the specs of an AC Shelby Cobra] were painstakingly researched, individually repurposed and then amalgamated again with a pointed attention to simplicity. Sometimes it only looks easy.
